What is PMR? (Prey Model Raw)

Welcome to the foundation of how we feed at Ancestral Raw Nutrition.

PMR (Prey Model Raw) is a feeding approach designed to mimic the natural diet of canine ancestors by focusing on animal-based ingredients rather than heavily processed foods. The goal is to provide nutrition through raw meat, edible bone, and nutrient-rich organs.

At Ancestral Raw Nutrition, we believe nutrition should come from real food — not fillers, artificial additives, unnecessary plant ingredients, or synthetic ingredients whenever possible.

The PMR Ratio

The traditional Prey Model Raw ratio consists of:

80% Muscle Meat
Provides protein, amino acids, fats, and energy.

10% Raw Edible Bone
Provides natural calcium, phosphorus, and supports dental health.

5% Liver
One of nature’s most nutrient-dense organs, rich in vitamins and minerals.

5% Other Secreting Organ
Organs such as kidney, spleen, pancreas, or similar nutrient-rich organs provide additional nutritional support.

Do Dogs Need Fruits and Vegetables?

For many healthy dogs, PMR feeders believe that nutrients commonly associated with fruits and vegetables can also be found naturally in animal tissues, organs, and whole prey ingredients.

Dogs are facultative carnivores and can digest plant material, but PMR focuses primarily on animal-based nutrition.

Transitioning to PMR

If you're new to raw feeding:

Days 1–3: Start with simple proteins like Chicken or Turkey
Days 4–7: Slowly introduce additional proteins
Week 2+: Begin adding variety and rotation

Keep meals simple during the transition and monitor stool consistency, appetite, and energy levels.
